3D printed kits from the mind of a concept artist
About the founder
Hi! I’m Gavin, and I'm an experienced concept artist working in the games industry, specialising in hard surface design and sci-fi. I've always been obsessed with model kits and have been building and painting them since I was a child.
It's always been a dream of mine to combine my passion for art and sci fi, and my love for making models, to produce my own kit for people to build and paint. This is why I started Carbon Copy.
Manufacturing /.
Every physical kit is printed on site in the garage on our print farm, consisting of Elegoo Saturn Ultras and Uniformation GKTwo’s. Every part is pulled, washed, cured and checked by hand before packaging.
Key features /.
-
We're currently using Elegoo ABS like 2.0 resin as we find it has a nice balance between detail and durability.
Standard resins tend to be a bit too brittle, we want to get as close to the qualities of cast resin as possible.
We'll be testing other resins in the future as and when the technology develops.
-
Printing is done on Uniformation GKTwo's at 0.03 layer height and curing at around 2.8 seconds per layer.
A lot of testing and prototyping is done on our Elegoo Saturn 3 Ultras because of the unrivalled speed of the printer.
-
Washing and Curing is done in Elegoo Mercury wash and cure machines using 90% Isopropyl alcohol.
Each part is cured both sides at around 7 minutes per each.
-
All parts are checked for defects and packaged safely ready for dispatch.
Due to the nature of 3D printing, there will be nub marks where the supports meet the surface of the parts. Supports are used in discreet places, and clever engineering of the kits means that a lot of them will be hidden. There will still be some clean-up that needs doing, although we believe it's still less work than a traditional cast resin kit!
You also don't need to wash off any mould release from the parts.
